Learning How to Trade in a Fast Moving Market

High tech stocks and the latest ‘hot’ IPOs can cause the price of stocks to soar and drop suddenly, resulting in a ‘fast market’. These fast markets cause investors to want to trade at high volumes causing the stock prices to change quickly, causing delays to develop across the board. Investors can suffer unexpected losses very quickly because fast markets result in confirmations and executions to slow down, at the same time reported prices lag behind their actual levels.

The Difference Between Online Trading and Online Investing

Making a trade online consists of only a click of the mouse, hundreds of online brokers offering five dollar executions. This action saves an investor time and money, but should not be confused with online investing. Online investing consists of doing your homework and researching stocks to make a wise investment decision.

Market Orders vs. Limit Orders

Online investors and investors in general, need to be aware that prices can move quickly and setting a price limit can guard against heavy losses.

To ensure that you don't buy or sell a stock higher or lower than you intended, you should place a limit order as opposed to a market order. A limit order sets a specific price at which you want to buy or sell a particular security. Placing a sell limit order designates a stock to be sold at only the limit price or higher. The same goes for a buy limit order; it can only be executed at or below the set limit price. However, please be advised that if there market moves too quickly, a limit order can be "passed by" and the order may not be executed.
